Safety & Environment

Safety in All We Do

Koloma is committed to harnessing the power of natural hydrogen safely and responsibly in cooperation with local leaders and communities. Our approach combines careful field science with meaningful public dialogue.

Safety is integrated into everything we do. Koloma follows the highest standards and industry best practices for producing and handling hydrogen, ensuring the safety of our employees, our partners, and the communities where we operate.

On-Ground Gas Monitor

Portable monitors designed for outdoor environments continuously measure various gas concentrations in real-time for fast response in an emergency.

Preserving the Environment

Koloma is working to create a cleaner energy future by identifying, accessing, and producing natural hydrogen – a clean, cost-effective, and sustainable primary energy source. We drive environmental preservation with ingenuity and hold our operations to the highest standards of environmental stewardship.

Before operations begin in a new area, we ensure our environmental protection approach meets community needs and complies with all local, state, and federal ordinances and regulations.

Our team conducts environmental impact assessments to identify any potential risks to native plants and animals, groundwater, or other ecological impacts. If any risks surface in the assessment, appropriate protections are put in place.

We engage early and often with community members and public officials to share information about our approach, understand any concerns and ensure our operations are tailored to meet community needs and designed for each area’s unique environmental conditions.

We procure all necessary regulatory permits and adhere to stringent environmental safety standards, often exceeding regulations on the books. Our operations teams assess local conditions and then develop and follow strict procedures that minimize dust, light, and noise, mitigating any potential disturbances near populated areas. We coordinate with local officials on emergency response readiness.

Cement
Placed between casings and the rock formations to create a permanent seal to protect the surrounding environment and provide structural support.  Also prevents any crossflow between formations.

Conductor Casing
Provides structural integrity to prevent the sides of the hole from caving into the wellbore during initial drilling operations, and creates a sealed, controlled pathway for early drilling fluids until the surface casing depth is achieved.

Surface Casing
Installed after conductor casing to isolate and protect groundwater aquifers from any potential contamination of drilling or reservoir fluids. Placement of surface casing is governed by regulatory requirements to ensure environmental and safety standards are met during drilling.

Intermediate Casing

Installed after surface casing to provide additional structural support to the wellbore and maintain stability.

Drilling Mud
Fluid circulated in the wellbore during drilling to prevent external fluids from entering the wellbore, aid in carrying drill cuttings to the surface, and keep the drill bit cooled.

Production Casing
The last layer of casing installed, used to create a solid path for gas to travel from the bottom of the well up to the wellhead.  It allows for long-term well integrity and pressure control.

Production Tubing

The main controlled flow path for production that is used to protect the production casing from pressure, corrosion, and wear.  It allows for the well to be serviced without disturbing the production casing.

Below Ground Safety

To access hydrogen reservoirs, Koloma constructs and maintains wells that are carefully designed to ensure their integrity throughout the well lifecycle.

All wells are constructed with multiple and redundant layers of cement and steel casing that serve as structural barriers to ensure the wellbore is completely isolated and to protect groundwater and surrounding ecosystems.

All of Koloma’s operations adhere to various local, state, and federal regulations, as applicable, for exploration operations including:

  • Endangered Species Act (ESA)
  • State Oil & Gas/mining regulatory permitting and licensing requirements
  • State natural resource agency regulatory permitting and licensing requirements
  • Local (county/municipality) permitting requirements
  • State/Local Dept. of Transportation permitting requirements
